Duckpond in Pre-Production
Alison Bennett, the director of Duckpond, and I have been in a meeting marathon this weekend. We’re locking in a group of killer creatives, making schedules and getting serious about budgets.
Bringing a theatrical idea to real life is tough. But when you’re taking such big risks (creative, financial and otherwise), there’s no point doing it if the process is not also fun and fulfilling, and shared with other inspirational artists. So I’m really glad I’ve got Alison, and a couple of old and new collaborators along for the journey.
You can tell you’re onto a good idea when the conversation flows quickly and freely. Alison revealed to us all some horrifying facts about ducks, that even I hadn’t come across after all my writing research. I noted down pages of design ideas, and some actually might still stick once we take logistics into account. The play isn’t even finished, but the images are getting a work out.
My writing song this weekend is ‘Modern World’ by Joelistics. Joelistics is Joel Ma, an Asian Australian hip hop artist I saw earlier this year in In Between Two, a work about family and culture produced by Contemporary Asian Australian Performance. I’ve had it on repeat. Have a listen and get thinking.
